    Welcome! This course will focus on building better communication by extending your skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking. We will accomplish this in a variety of ways including, but not limited to:

    Narrative writing project(s)

    Informative and Argumentative essay(s)

    In-class discussions


    Literature circles

    Individual and group presentations


    Class Expectations

    At New Vistas High School we expect a classroom culture of respect and responsibility. In this class that means students need to:

    1. Be respectful of the teacher, classmates, staff/volunteers, and materials.
    2. Electronic devices should be used only when appropriate.
    3. Be prepared with all materials necessary for class.
    4. Work hard and complete assignments on time.
    5. No sleeping! You must be awake in order to learn!
    6. Do your own work.
    7. Arrive to class on time.
    8. No food or drink is allowed in the classroom.

    Assessments and Grading

    You will have formative assessments (participation and daily assignments) worth 30% of your overall grade and summative assessments (tests, quizzes, projects, and essays) worth 70% of your overall grade. You will receive a rubric outlining the expectations when projects and essays are assigned.


    Makeup Work

    Much of the work may be project-based. You may stay after school to work on missing assignments or get explanations. When you are absent, it is your responsibility to make sure you receive your missed work. If you miss more than two consecutive excused days, please call the main office and arrange to have work picked up to prevent you from falling too far behind.
